Literature Review Key Findings

The French literature is notable for its nuanced analysis of the impacts of AD on the sexual health of both patients and their partners. The French literature also includes studies of adolescents and their parents, which have been understudied in the other countries of interest. There are also several studies which detail the mental health burden experienced by patients in France.

One study of sleep difficulty, anxiety, and depression in a French cohort of patients found that 57.4% of patients reported anxiety, and 73.0% of patients reported depression as measured by the PHQ-9 scale. Of the patients whose score indicated depression, 37.5% had moderate depression, and 7.0% severe depression. This study provides some context for healthcare utilization by patients with AD in France, but there is likely more research needed in this area.

The French literature contains several studies on topical steroid concerns among both patients and healthcare providers. One study describes the success of a therapeutic patient education program at alleviating such concerns supporting the notion that educational interventions may be an effective method for increasing adherence and generating downstream improvements in disease severity and QoL.
